Remember the TSS "STEFAN BATORY"
The "STEFAN BATORY" was built by Wilton-Fijenoord in Holland in 1952 as the SS MAASDAM, she was operated on the European to Montreal and New York service by Holland America Line until 1968, she was then acquired by POLISH OCEAN LINES and renamed "STEFAN BATORY", the ship was 15.024 GRT and had a cruising speed of 16.5 knots powered by gas turbines, the capacity was for about 750 passengers. This fine vessel was scrapped in Turkey as the Swedish STEFAN in 2000. Postcard from my private collection
I remember TSS Stefan Batory, I sailed aboard her from Montreal to London, July-August, 1980. That was the year of Solidarity (Solidarność) and the crew were reluctant to discuss politics.

My family emigrated form England to Montreal in Nov 1974 on the Stefan Batory, when I was 14. Lovely ship and the crew were superb.
ReplyDeleteMy wife and I took the Stephan Batory from Montreal to South Hampton and then on to Hamburg in 1976. It took us 10 days to cross the Atlantic. Saw whales, icebergs and the likes. Quite an adventure. It was then one of the last liners in service.
